DFS MLB Pitching Coach: May 26
Jerry Colvin

Jon Moscot (shoulder) is scheduled to make another rehab start on Thursday.

Moscot has missed most of the month with left shoulder discomfort and is coming off a rehab start where he allowed nine runs and 11 hits over four innings. It will be interesting to see what the Reds do if Moscot struggles again, but for now, it appears he is close to returning to the big league team. Fantasy owners can look elsewhere as there isn’t much upside with Moscot.

Danny Duffy is expected to be limited to 80 pitches Thursday.

Duffy continues to build up his pitch count after being inserted into the rotation from the bullpen when Kris Medlen went down with a shoulder injury. The left-hander has pitched well as he has yet to give up a run in his two starts. Unfortunately, due to the pitch count limit, he hasn’t been able to complete five innings. Duffy could be an option soon for fantasy owners, but until his pitch restriction is lifted, there are better alternatives.

Manager Dave Roberts insists the decision to give Yasiel Puig a day off was made before he removed the outfielder from the game on Tuesday night. ‘It’s not punitive at all,’ Roberts said. ‘After the game we talked. He received everything well, so it’s just moving forward.

The drama continues with the Dodgers and Puig and it would be a lot easier to handle if the outfielder was performing. However, a horrible slash line of .246/.287/.380 with five homeruns and 19 RBIs has made it difficult to accept his antics. Fantasy owners’ patience have worn thin and if they haven’t traded Puig already, the only choice is to stash him on the bench and hope he turns his season around.

Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder) threw four scoreless innings for Class Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

Ryu has now made three rehab starts and continues to be on track to return in the middle of June. The left-hander struck out three and walked none in those four innings which is a positive sign as he attempts to battle back from a shoulder injury that has kept him out for a season and a half. Ryu has a career 3.17 ERA so he is a pitcher fantasy owners who are in deeper leagues should stash away as he could help in the second half of the season.

Mariners said Leonys Martin (hamstring) is listed as day to day.

Martin is expected to miss the next couple of games after leaving the game on May 25 to start the fourth inning with a tweaked left hamstring. Martin was having another solid game prior to leaving as he collected a hit, stolen base and RBI. On the season, Martin has a slash line of .262/.339/.483 with nine homeruns and eight stolen bases so hopefully the outfielder will not miss much time and can return after the weekend.

Xander Bogaerts (thumb) is expected to be available Thursday.

Bogaerts stayed in the game for the Red Sox after having a runner slide into his thumb while making a tag so it’s great news that he avoided any serious injury. The shortstop was able to extend his hitting streak to 18 games as the Red Sox continue to help fantasy owners in a big way this season. Bogaerts has a slash line of .349/.404/.513 with five homeruns and six stolen bases and should continue to be one of the top shortstop performers in fantasy for the remainder of the season.

Austin Romine went 1-for-1 with a pinch hit home run in the Yankees 8-4 loss to the Blue Jays Wednesday

Romine has seen the majority of his at-bats come off the bench in relief of Brian McCann behind the plate. Romine was able to hit his first home run of the year Wednesday but it came after the game was already put to rest. Due to his low volume of at-bats, Romine can not be considered much of a fantasy option and his only value would really be if you want to take a big risk in DFS if he is filling in for McCann one night.
