On Friday the Kansas City Royals activated OF Lorenzo Cain from the 15-day DL. Cain who has been sidelined since June 29 with a left hamstring strain, played in two rehab assignments for AAA Omaha going 3-8. To make room for Cain on the roster the Royals have optioned OF Brett Eibner.
Miami Marlins Cole Gillespie was designated for assignment Friday along with INF Cole Figueroa. Gillespie who played limited time with the Marlins anyway will likely now go back down to AAA New Orleans. He was batting 12-51 with only five RBI for the Marlins, and just .204 BA with AAA New Orleans before getting called up.
Miami Marlins Christian Yelich will get the day off Friday as he is not in the starting lineup. In the midst of a little 1-13 skid, he will be replaced by Ichiro Suzuki in left field who will also try to reach 3,000 hits today with a pair of knocks. Yelich is still batting .316 on the season and has three homers since the All Star break.
As the Jets start team drills Friday, it appears that there is no sign of defensive end Sheldon Richardson. Richardson is suspended for week one without pay for leading police on a high speed chase back in July of 2015.
Apparently Astros P Luis Valbuena's hamstring injury was a bit more severe than originally thought as he was placed on the 15-day DL Friday. Valbuena who went down with the injury Tuesday was examined by head team physician David Lintner, who thought that the DL could be avoided. Valbuena's injury delays the left field debut of Alex Bergman who had to start at third base Wednesday, and will likely be the replacement for Valbuena for the time being.
For the second time in two days Jets newly acquired RB Matt Forte has been with trainers working on a tweaked hamstring. Forte who signed on with the Jets this off season after spending his last eight in Chicago is expected to come in and take a bulk of the workload as he is a primary all purpose back. Last season Forte had 1,287 all purpose yards for the Bears with seven touchdowns.
