A mock draft is to a fantasy player as a pregame walk through is to a football team, you have a game plan and know what plays you can expect to run, but you always need to be ready for surprises during the main event. When drafting a fantasy team, one will naturally look for the availability of players they like, but should also be looking for backup options to substantially fill team needs should a surprise occur. One method I’ve found helpful in fending off the surprises is making sure to cover all the bases (literally). When drafting players, looking for those who can fill multiple positions on your roster is crucial for two reasons:

fantasy baseball

On January 25, 2012, I participated in the Hardball Times expert fantasy baseball mock draft with some of the best names in the industry. For me, this was my first mock draft of the season and I was very pleased with the team that I selected. The format of the mock draft was a 12-team 5x5 roto league with starting lineups that included two catchers, five outfielders, a corner and middle infielder, and nine pitchers. I had the 4th overall pick in the draft and was quite surprised with who slipped to me in the 1st round. For this review of the mock draft, I will provide some insight and analysis of the entire first round and then summarize all of my picks.

Las Vegas, NV - (January 17, 2012) -- The Fantasy Sports Trade Association (FSTA) Experts' Baseball Draft was held in Las Vegas, NV on January 16, and featured industry leaders such as USA Today, CBS Sports, Rotoworld, and Fantasy Alarm. The annual event represents the inauguration of the fantasy baseball season, and is an early trend-setter for fantasy baseball player value and projections. The draft lasted 29 rounds and took three hours, with shortstop Troy Tulowitzki garnering the first overall selection. The event was broadcast live, pick-by-pick, on Sirius XM Fantasy Sports Radio, with additional commentary from each of the 13 participants. Sports Guru and SiriusXM/Fantasy Alarm Show personality, Jeff Mans, selected 11th overall, and was very happy about the draft results. "Getting Justin Upton at the eleven spot was as much a steal as you'll get in the first round." Jeff Mans said. "He provides so much upside in every category, and could very well be one of the top five players in fantasy baseball this year. We were also happy to snag Stephen Strasburg at the end of the fifth round. He won't throw 200 innings, but will be an elite option for strikeouts and WHIP."

I've been told it is too early to start mock drafting for the 2012 baseball season. To that, I say, "Pshaw." I am addicted to mock drafting, to be sure, but it is an addiction I embrace. I don't need any stinkin' intervention to resolve this issue. In fact, I urge every fantasy baseball player to begin mocking right now, at least once you've had a chance to read my thoughts on the matter.
