Believe it or not, we’re a little light on the injuries this week. There are still a few notables from Week 12 but overall, the marquee names seemed to have escaped the clutches of the dreaded injury bug. Most fantasy owners can breathe a sigh of relief, but for those that weren’t so lucky, here’s the latest on the NFL injury front…
Matt Leinart, QB HOU – A fractured collarbone during Sunday’s game and the need for surgery will more than likely land Leinart on IR this week which will put him on the shelf for the remainder of the season. He didn’t even get to make it through his first full game this year. The 8-3 Texans are going to have to go with T.J. Yates in Week 13 with recently signed Kellen Clemens as the back-up and are rumored to be looking to add another veteran QB to the mix. We’ll keep you posted on that one.
James Starks, RB GB – You’re going to have to monitor Stark’s practice schedule this week as he left last Thursday’s game with an ankle injury. It doesn’t sound too serious, but it was enough to have him sit for most of the second half. He was already banged up coming into the game, so just watch for his status during the week. If Starks is unable to go, then look for Ryan Grant to take a lead role with a good matchup against the Giants.
Kevin Smith, RB DET – Smith was on top of the world with his big breakout game in Week 11, but an ankle injury forced him from Thursday’s game and the hottest pick-up on the waiver wire became the biggest bust of the week. It was first reported to be the dreaded “high ankle sprain”, but apparently that was a misdiagnosis and now it is just a simple ankle sprain. He’ll be listed as questionable for now, but check back on the practice schedule and see what’s what. Maurice Morris gutted out a solid performance in his place, so if Smith returns for Week 13, expect more of a committee situation as the Lions can’t afford to lose their running game.
Michael Jenkins, WR MIN – Not since that one week in October has Jenkins been more than a WR4/5, so worrying about his current knee injury is probably a low priority. He played through it during Sunday’s contest, but afterwards, Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said that Jenkins might miss some time down the stretch here while he rests the knee. There has been no talk of an immediate MRI, so it just sounds like a minor tweak. However, given the Vikings record, it would make sense to give him some time off if he figures heavily into the team’s future plans.
Sidney Rice, WR SEA – He failed to practice on Monday and was listed on the team’s injury report with a concussion. That makes two concussions in the last three weeks, and while he may have shaken things off the last time, he might not be so lucky here. He will go through the NFL’s protocol for concussions and there’s a very strong chance that he will miss this week’s game given the short week. Monitor his progress up to Thursday, but the chances of him sitting out are pretty high right now.
Players who missed Week 12 that you should be watching include: Kevin Kolb, Michael Vick, Darren McFadden, Adrian Peterson, LaDanian Tomlinson, Ahmad Bradhsaw, Mario Manningham, Jeremy Maclin, Miles Austin, Danario Alexander, Denarius Moore, Jacoby Ford, Malcom Floyd, Chad Ochocinco, Dallas Clark – We’ll keep checking the practice schedule and be back Friday with full updates and the official NFL Week 13 Injury Report.
It’s playoff time, folks! Get ready!
