Welcome to the weekend, folks! It’s time for another look at the latest in NFL injuries and what your options are for this weekend’s fantasy football matchups. As always, we’ll start with the guys we touched on in Tuesday’s edition and from there we’ll talk about some of the other key injuries that may have an effect on your lineups. After that, you’ll see the NFL’s official Week 9 injury report listed at the end. So without further ado…
Kevin Kolb, QB ARI – He practiced on a limited basis Thursday and was actually not wearing the walking boot, but it still looks like John Skelton will be under center for the Cardinals this Sunday. Kolb is still listed as questionable and will technically be a game time decision, but the likelihood of him playing is low. Hopefully you have found yourself a better alternative.
Beanie Wells, RB ARI – Wells’ knee problems will be an ongoing issue all season, but it looks like something he is going to be able to play through. He returned to a limited practice on Thursday and should probably do the same on Friday. He’s listed as questionable, but all signs point to him playing. Check back with the inactives before game time just to be on the safe side. LaRod Stephens-Howling and Alfonso Smith would pull RB duty if Wells suffers any kind of setback.
Ryan Mathews, RB SD – After missing another practice Friday with a groin injury, it appears that Mathews will take a seat this week. He’s now missed three straight days and it would probably be in the Chargers’ best interest if they kept him on the sidelines. Mike Tolbert is ready to go and it also looks like Curtis Brinkley (concussion) may be ready to go as well. If you’re a Mathews owner, you should be using other options this week.
Ahmad Bradshaw, RB NYG – There are far too many conflicting reports coming in regarding Bradshaw’s status for this week and beyond. Some say he might play while others are talking about him being out indefinitely. The bottom line is that he has a cracked bone in his foot, he’s missed the last three days of practice, and the chances of him really playing this week are pretty slim. Even if he did make it onto the field, his effectiveness would be pretty limited. The Giants will likely go with Brandon Jacobs as the primary this week with D.J. Ware spelling him from time.
Hakeem Nicks, WR NYG – He did not return to practice Friday and now it looks like Nicks will miss this week with his hamstring injury. He was downgraded to doubtful but will probably just miss the one game. Mario Manningham and Victor Cruz get an immediate bump in the weekly rankings here as the Giants/Pats game could turn into quite the shootout.
Fred Davis, TE – After missing practice and having his foot in a walking boot, Davis (ankle) returned to practice both Thursday and Friday, albeit on a limited basis. Initially he thought playing this week would be a no-brainer, but now he seems to be hedging his bets a little as the injury was a little more severe than he thought. Consider Davis a game time decision this week, but if he’s starting, then you’ll want him active.
And now for the rest of the injury updates…
Sam Bradford, STL – While he is still listed as questionable and being called a game time decision, Bradford was back at practice in limited fashion on Friday. The word is that he’ll play, but keep an alternative handy just in case. A.J. Feely would get the start again if Bradford is unable to play.
Peyton Hillis, CLE – All signs pointed towards Hillis starting this week until Friday’s practice when he re-aggravated his hamstring injury and was immediately shipped out for an MRI. The results didn’t show any kind of a tear, but they’re already talking about him missing atleast another two weeks. With Montario Hardesty also out, Chris Ogbannaya will get the starting nod and the majority of touches.
Mark Ingram, NO – Saints coach Sean Payton gave the official word on Friday that Ingram will not play in Week 9. He is still dealing with a bruised heel and the team would rather him take a set again and use the combination of Darren Sproles, Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory against the Bucs.
Joseph Addai, IND – After participating in full practices all week, Addai took the day off Friday to rest and is still listed as questionable for Sunday. He should suit up and play, possibly even start and might be usable as a flex play this week. Delone Carter and Donald Brown will still take their fair share of carries as well, but Addai should get enough work to make him relevant.
Kevin Faulk, NE – He’s been limited in practice all week, but according to most insiders, he should suit up and be ready to play on Sunday. Faulk was activated from the PUP list just prior to Week 8 and actually garnered the most touches in the Patriots’ backfield, so with BenJarvis Green-Ellis still dealing with a toe injury (he’s listed as questionable as well), Faulk should see some decent touches again this week.
Darren McFadden, OAK – Officially ruled out for this week with a sprained foot still. We thought he’d be back after the bye week, but it looks like he still needs some rest. Michael Bush will handle the load this week.
Daniel Thomas, MIA – It looks like the hamstring is going to be an issue all year. However, Thomas still participated in practice on a limited basis and should suit up this week. Of course, that’s what we all thought last week, so check the inactives prior to game time.
Andre Johnson, HOU – Texans coach Gary Kubiak spared fantasy owners an extra day of aggravation and wonder as he announced that Johnson would not play this week. With a bye wek in Week 11, the Texans are likely to keep him out next week as well and just try and move forward come Week 12. Fantasy owners have to be pulling their hair out here.
Plaxico Burress, NYJ – While he practiced on a limited basis both Thursday and Friday, Burress’ lower back is still causing him problems and is leaving him as questionable for this week. It sounds like he’ll play and he’s got a nice matchup with Buffalo, but you’ll want to keep checking back before the game begins.
Danario Alexander, STL – He is officially being ruled out for Week 9 after re-injuring his hamstring during practice this week. Brandon Gibson will get the start in his place and it looks like a bump in targets for both Brandon Lloyd and Greg Salas against a suspect Arizona defense.
Malcom Floyd, SD – Floyd missed practice all week long with his hip injury, but reports are coming out of San Diego saying that he still might play this week. He is listed as questionable, but will obviously be a game time decision. If he does play, he’s definitely worth a look at the game vs Green Bay could turn into quite the shootout.
Hines Ward, PIT – Ward missed last week with an ankle injury and has continued to deal with it all week. He practiced all week on a limited basis and says that he is definitely playing. Check back prior to game time for the official word.
Emmanuel Sanders, PIT – Listed as out with a knee injury, but Sanders is actually away from the team right now due to personal reasons. Look for him to return in Week 10.
Wes Welker, NE – He’s been bothered by a neck injury all week, but most believe that his being listed as questionable on the injury report is just typical Bellichek gamesmanship. Welker should suit up and be a force in this game vs the Giants.
Lee Evans, BAL – Still dealing with the same ankle issue, and while the Ravens say that he’s not a candidate for IR, he’s probably not going to contribute at all this season.
Brent Celek, PHI – He’s got a hip contusion which kept him out of practice Thursday, but Celek was back on the field Friday and should be ready to go this week. He’s listed as questionable for the time being, but he wants to play and will likely be out there come game time.
Dallas Clark, IND – While he is listed as questionable with a knee injury, Clark returned to full practice Thursday and Friday and is more than likely to play. Always smart to double check prior to game time, but he should be ready to go.
Jermaine Gresham, CIN – It looks like he’ll be missing another game as he failed to practice at all this week while still nursing the hamstring injury that kept him out of Week 8. It’s probably safe to say that if you were still holding out hope, you should get yourself another tight end for this week.
Aaron Hernandez, NE – Yet another player listed as questionable by the Pats, but again, more than likely to play this week. He was limited in practice all week, but should be his usual reliable self come game time.
