Welcome to Week 13, folks. It’s either the end of your regular season or the start of your playoffs right now and either way, a win is imperative. Even if your team is out of contention, you should still be checking in on the latest injuries because there’s nothing more fun than playing the spoiler and screwing over one of your buddies. To help you in your quest for victory, we’ll take you through the latest list of key injuries and discuss practice reports so that you can field your optimal lineup this week. And don’t forget to check back early Saturday morning to catch the most recent edition of the Week 13 NFL injury Report!
Sam Bradford, STL – He’s now been dealing with this ankle injury over the last four weeks, but things seem to have gotten a little bit worse after he really aggravated it during last week’s game. The Rams held him out of practice on Thursday and seem to be taking more of a wait-and-see approach. If he is able to practice on Friday then he should be good to go for Sunday’s game, but if he’s having difficulties still, then A.J. Feely might be called upon again. Feely might not be as accurate a passer as Bradford, but he’s worked with the first team enough to not force you to downgrade others such as Brandon Lloyd too much.
Josh Freeman, TB – A bum shoulder has sidelined Freeman for most of the week, although he did take part in some drills on Friday and threw a few passes. While it’s encouraging to see him starting to throw, the Bucs are hedging their bets and have had Josh Johnson taking first-team reps. Hopefully we’ll have a firm decision from the team before Sunday, but given the circumstances surrounding Freeman and the probability of leaning on LeGarrette Blount and the running game, you might want to look elsewhere for a QB.
Kevin Kolb, ARI – Not that Kolb playing is anything to rejoice over, but atleast the John Skelton era has come to a close in Arizona. Kolb has now been listed as probable and is set to start this Sunday. He was a sleeper coming into the season but failed to live up to expectations and then got hurt. If you own him, you might want to wait a game just to see how he clicks with the first-team. The matchup with Dallas is also a tough one as they’ve allowed just 15 TDs through the air and have accumulated 30 sacks on the season.
Cedric Benson, CIN – The big, bruising Bengals back (how’s that for alliteration?) missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday this week with a foot injury he sustained during Sunday’s game against the Browns. However, Benson said that he would return Friday and that, while he is listed as questionable, he will be on the field this Sunday. We like the optimism, but would feel more comfortable with a positive practice report later today. Keep an eye on the situation and, if you have room on your roster, think about adding Bernard Scott for insurance purposes.
Ahmad Bradhsaw, NYG – It was easy to be skeptical all week as Bradhsaw continued to miss practice but said that he would like to be on the field this Sunday against the Packers. But in an interesting turn of events, Bradshaw was on the practice field Friday and actually increased his chances of being on the field this weekend. It’s been four weeks since Bradhsaw was diagnosed with a fracture in his foot, so we’ll tread lightly with the recommendation here, but his return, this close to the fantasy playoffs could be huge for those that stashed him away on the bench this whole time.
Montario Hardesty, CLE -- For the first time since aggravating his calf during pre-game warm-ups last week, Hardesty was back on the practice field. While it’s encouraging to see, he is probably not one to trust this week. He will likely be a game-time decision and even if he does play, his touches will be minimal. Moving forward though, he could be an interesting option in Week 15 when the Browns travel to Arizona.
Kevin Smith, DET – It’s looking better and better for Smith this week after turning in his second consecutive full practice on Friday and he should be the starting running back for the Lions as they take on the Saints this week. Just be cautious here as there is always the chance of re-aggravating the injury during the game. The Lions will likely use Maurice Morris to spell Smith a little more regularly to try and keep his legs fresh, but there’s also the possibility that the Lions fall behind early and abandon the running game. Consider Smith nothing more than a RB2 at this point.
Michael Turner, ATL – We’re still waiting to get the practice report from the Falcons here at press time, but Turner has missed the last two days of practice with a groin injury. He’s battled with this injury before in his career so the rest might just be precautionary, but we’d feel better about it if he could turn in some sort of a practice before Sunday. He’s listed as questionable right now and depending on how Friday plays out, he could be a game time decision. If he plays though, he’s the type of guy you have to start.
Note: While they are both still listed as questionable right now, both Darren McFadden and Adrian Peterson are likely to miss this week’s games. Make sure your lineups are adjusted accordingly. Also, both Frank Gore and Beanie Wells have been listed as questionable and probably will be for the duration of the season. But barring any setbacks both will play this week and should continue the rest of the way.
Percy Harvin, MIN – The Vikings are listing Harvin as questionable after he sat out practice on Friday, but that was the first day he’s missed all week. No, that’s not a downgrade. The team just wants him to rest a little to avoid re-aggravating the rib injury that has plagued him over the last few weeks. With Peterson out for this week, the team will use Harvin as the focal point of their offense again, getting him some carries as well as his usual number of targets and return attempts. He does have an interesting matchup this week though as the Broncos have shut down some strong receivers over the last few weeks and Champ Bailey is likely to shadow him when he lines up as a receiver. You can’t sit him, but you may want to lower your expectations.
Mario Manningham, NYG – Still experiencing swelling in the knee, Manningham sat out practice again on Friday, severely damaging his chances of playing this weekend against the Packers. In fact, he’s being listed as doubtful on the injury report so you might want to grab yourself an alternative if you need to. Look for Ramses Barden to take his place in the lineup.
Hakeem Nicks, NYG – While his teammate Manningham is likely to miss this week, Nicks, who missed Wednesday and Thursday, returned to full practice Friday and is listed as probable for this week. With a potential shootout looming, you should feel very comfortable using Nicks this week.
Miles Austin, DAL – He’s now missed practice all week after sitting out Friday and although he is listed as questionable, Austin will likely miss his fourth straight game.
Malcom Floyd, SD – Floyd has now turned in consecutive days of full practice and has been listed as probable for this week after a four-game layoff. While it’s tough to say just how well he’ll fare this week, it certainly has to be considered a boost to the Chargers offense. Phillip Rivers has another favorite target in the lineup and both Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates should benefit with Floyd pulling more coverage away.
Jacoby Ford, OAK – He continues to be listed as questionable, but after missing another practice on Thursday, the chances of seeing Ford on the field Sunday are pretty slim. He claims that his foot injury isn’t as severe as McFadden’s, but even if for some remote reason he does get back onto the field, it would be difficult to trust in him at such a crucial time of the year.
Denarius Moore, Oak – Everything that was just said about Ford can be duplicated here for Moore; just change foot to ankle.
Julio Jones, ATL – A return to the practice field on Friday should make owners feel a little more comfortable about Jones’ hamstring injury after he sat out Wednesday and Thursday and didn’t record a single catch last week. He is listed as questionable, but is expected to play. However, it’s a tough matchup with Houston and given the fact that Roddy White and Matt Ryan have been so effective with each other these last two games, the probability of Jones making a serious impact this week runs a little low. You can consider him a decent WR3 right now barring any setbacks, but if you’re wavering between him and a comparable receiver, you might want to go with the alternative this week to play it safe.
Dallas Clark, IND – He’s officially out for this week, so you can leave him on your bench and find a healthier tight end.
