Denard Span Headshot

Span is sitting out of Monday's contest due to left thumb inflammation, Alec Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

This explains why the veteran outfielder is sitting out of a matchup with a right-handed pitcher. Span said that the issue has been bothering him for about a week, so it doesn't seem to be anything terribly serious. He may need a day or two off to alleviate the problem, so consider him day-to-day for the time being. Gorkys Hernandez will likely see an uptick in playing time while Span is sidelined.

Victor Martínez Headshot

Martinez was activated from the paternity list and is batting cleanup as the designated hitter Monday against the Astros, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Martinez is back in the lineup after missing the last three games while on the paternity list. V-Mart, who is slashing .270/.228/.387 with 23 RBI through 137 at-bats this season, will face off against Brad Peacock in his return to the lineup.

Jesmuel Valentin Headshot

Valentin may require season-ending surgery on his ailing shoulder, Ryan Lawrence of PhillyVoice.com reports.

Valentin injured his shoulder diving for a ball earlier in the month, and it seems like the injury is fairly serious. No decision on the surgery is set in stone at this time, but if the operation is the route the Phillies opt to go, Scott Kingery could benefit from the injury and fill the void in Lehigh Valley, although the Phillies also aren't willing to guarantee that. More information on this front should come forth relatively soon, however.

Chris Heston Headshot

Heston was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Monday.

Heston was sent back to Tacoma after getting roughed up during his spot start against the White Sox on Sunday, allowing seven runs through three innings while walking four batters and only striking out two. Given he has made two appearances for the big club this season and conceded 12 runs across just five innings, the Mariners may decide to look elsewhere should they need another spot starter. Emilio Pagan was recalled from Triple-A to take his spot on the roster for the time being.
5:21 pm (EST)
Chris Iannetta Headshot

Iannetta is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the White Sox, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Iannetta bashed a home run in his return from the disabled list Sunday, but he'll get the night off Monday likely in an effort to ease him back into action. Jeff Mathis will take over behind the dish for the night.
5:16 pm (EST)
Dan Vogelbach Headshot

Vogelbach was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Monday.

Vogelbach only appeared in one game with the big club before being sent back to Tacoma, going 1-for-3 in Sunday's loss to the White Sox. The 24-year-old will continue to fine tune his swing at Triple-A while the Mariners stick with Danny Valencia and Taylor Motter at first base for the time being. The move clears room for Robinson Cano (calf) to be activated from the disabled list Tuesday.
5:15 pm (EST)
Yasmany Tomás Headshot

Tomas is not in the lineup Monday against the White Sox, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Despite being in the midst of a six-game hit streak, Tomas will get the night off Monday. Reymond Fuentes will pick up a start in left field to replace him.
5:13 pm (EST)
Brandon Drury Headshot

Drury is not in the lineup Monday against the White Sox, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Drury is slumping at the plate as of late (4-for-25 in his past seven games), so he'll get a night off to right the ship. Daniel Descalso will take a turn at the keystone in his stead.
5:11 pm (EST)
Josh Ravin Headshot

Ravin will likely be sent back to the minors when Logan Forsythe (toe) is activated from the disabled list Tuesday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

Nothing has been made official yet, but after Forsythe's rehab appearances over the weekend went off without a hitch, Ravin's demotion is inevitable. Once the move is made official, Ravin will dwell in the minors until the Dodgers require more bullpen depth again.
5:08 pm (EST)
Tuffy Gosewisch Headshot

Gosewisch was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Monday.

Gosewisch was just 2-for-28 (.071) across 11 games with the big club before being sent back to Tacoma. The veteran backstop was replaced by fellow catcher Mike Zunino on the roster. He'll continue to serve as organizational catching depth for the Mariners.
